Corona Blog --10: Thoughts On Love

This is how God showed His love among us

God is love.
This is how God showed His love among us:
He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.
This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us
and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
(1 John 4:8-10)

The phrase, ‘not that we loved God, but that He loved us’ struck me with force the other day.

The definition of love is that God loved us.  It is God Who initiates, Who makes the first move, not me.  His love is not a response to anything I do, or don’t do.  ‘It is by grace you have been saved.’ (Eph 2:5)  And so we can rest in His love, securely.  It is not conditional on our good behaviour.

This is love: that God loved us.  End – and beginning – of story.

And then I had another thought.

God is love.   This is true because He is Trinity, three persons, one God.  And these three people eternally love – have loved – always will love – each other.  The relational God, three in one, is love.

And families are a little microcosm, a little demonstration, of love too…

Really, God is amazing!

‘God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – thank You that You are love.  Thank you that You loved first, that our love follows Yours, that we can rest secure in Your love.  Thank You so much for Who You are.’

Hello

Hi, my name is Mary.  I’ve been a member of City Gate church for ages, and my desire to know God grows every year.  I’ve recently been exploring the relationship we can have with God as Father because of Jesus, and that colours everything I see.  In the midst of this corona virus pandemic, I find myself wondering what God is doing at this time.
